Cozy Cuisine

By Lauren Rippey Eberle
December, 2009

When Jack Frost comes nipping at your nose, there’s nothing better that a little comfort food. From pot pies to slow-cooked stews, here’s a roundup of Winston-Salem’s coziest cuisine.

Moravian Chicken Pie
Old Salem Tavern
736 S. Main St., 336-748-8585

Offered as a menu staple, traditional Moravian Chicken Pie is a double-crusted local classic. And of course, Old Salem Tavern’s historic setting makes the dish feel all the more homey.

Camel City Frogmore
Milner’s American Southern Restaurant
630 S. Stratford Rd., 336-768-2221

A traditional frogmore stew is a Lowcountry boil revolving around shellfish. Giving South Carolina a run for its money, the Camel City Frogmore’s rich flavors of shrimp, mussels, whitefish, scallops, sausage, hominy, and vegetables meld to give diners a summertime staple perfect for any season.

Shrimp and Cheese Grits
Diamondback Grill
753 N. Avalon Rd., 336-722-0006

In a city that boasts a dozen superb shrimp-and-grits recipes, Diamondback Grill’s dish takes a top spot with its surprisingly spicy pops of pepper jack cheese and flavorful chorizo sausage.

White Bean Chili
Hutch & Harris
424 W. Fourth St., 336-721-1336

A break from customary chili, Hutch & Harris’s white bean alternative combines pulled chicken, green chilis, navy beans with a Latin kick, and the unmistakable bite of fresh cilantro. The bowl is accompanied by layered cornbread with jalapenos, and we dare you to dip.

Peppermint Patty Mocha
Simplyummy Café
122 Reynolda Village, 336-724-9779

As decadent as its candy counterpart, Simplyummy’s Peppermint Patty Mocha is a wintertime winner, with the added pep of caffeine.

5-Flavor Pound Cake
Midtown Café and Dessertery
151 S. Stratford Rd., 336-724-9800

Awarded the “bestseller” distinction at Midtown Café and Dessertery, the moist 5-Flavor Pound Cake is even more decadent when ordered with a cream cheese icing.

Chicken Pho
Soup’s Orchid
219 W. Fourth St., 336-917-3000

Appropriately named, Soup’s Orchid’s specialty is pho — a Vietnamese beef and noodle soup. Chicken Pho is a hearty favorite, and the authentic restaurant presents its generous servings as a build-your-own platter with sprouts, peppers, sauces, and seasonings that customers can use to personalize to taste.

The Sweet Potatoes Hot Brown
Sweet Potatoes
529 N. Trade St., 336-727-4844

It’s hard to pick just one dish from Sweet Potatoes, as the Southern-inspired home-cooking restaurant seems to specialize in comfort. Still, the Hot Brown stands out. A Kentucky favorite, the dish piles sliced turkey, mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon, and cheddar cheese on top of a warm sweet-potato biscuit.

Mile High Chocolate Cake
Twin City Chop House
115 S. Main St., 336-748-8600

More than one repeat customer tells us that the Mile High Chocolate Cake at Twin City Chop House is the best you’ll ever have. With plenty to please two (or more), this soaring sweet is accompanied by a homemade chocolate pecan ice cream truffle.

Mac-n-Cheese
Noma Urban Bar & Grill
321 W. Fourth St., 336-703-5112

Offered as a side dish at Fourth Street’s Noma, this creamy mac-n-cheese is oftentimes served still bubbling in its ceramic ramekin.

Baked Brie
Bleu Restaurant & Bar
3425 Frontis St., 336-760-4943

You may go to Bleu for its succulent seafood, but it’s hard to ignore the gem of its appetizer list: the Baked Brie, whose cranberry chutney, spice apples, and roasted garlic complement the creamy brie and golden pastry crust.

Grilled Meatloaf
Village Tavern
221 Reynolda Village, 336-748-0221
2000 Griffith Rd., 336-760-8686

A respectable rival to Mom’s own recipe, Village Tavern’s Grilled Meatloaf is topped with a savory mushroom Madeira wine sauce, and served with mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables.
