Outreach Alliance for Babies

Tiny infants bring big-time demands. Just ask Phyllis Sample Bonds, founder and executive director of Outreach Alliance for Babies, whose house overflows with racks of baby clothes, stacks of bottles, and piles of diapers.

Founded in May 2005, the Alliance has provided baskets of necessities to more than 585 local families who are in dire financial circumstances. Family referrals come from various organizations, including the Department of Public Health, Exchange/SCAN, and Forsyth Medical Center.

“We wanted to work through agencies, because we didn’t want to come up with criteria. We know when they call us that the families are truly in need,” Bonds explains.

Each infant receives a layette, hand-assembled by Bonds, containing onesies, diapers, a sleeper, washcloths, a sleep-and-play set, a diaper bag, bibs, books, burp/lap cloths, snuggies, and formula. Some are even given car seats and strollers.

“It feels like a warm fuzzy when we give out the baskets,” says Linda Hege, chair of the board of directors. “We are very proud of Phyllis. She makes every one with love.”

It costs approximately $130 to fill one basket, which is realized through donations and fundraisers. Though no one has ever been turned away, the Alliance has issued a cap of 16 layettes per month due to the economy.

Bonds says the goal of the Alliance is “to assist even more babies. We want to get to the point where it doesn’t matter how many babies there are.”

The fifth annual fundraiser for Outreach Alliance for Babies is November 21 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Sundance Hotel. For more information, go to outreachalliance.org
