A special cut

Just down Peters Creek Parkway along the Forsyth County/Davidson County fringe, a new business is offering customers a taste of the old world.

Or make that olde world.

Opened in September 2008, Olde World Meat Market is a throwback to the golden era of butcher shops and country stores. It’s a place where meats of all varieties — from tenderloins to sirloins to just about anything else — sit behind display cases, allowing customers to inspect their options before ordering specific cuts. The market also lets customers order items in bulk or order by phone, giving folks a great excuse to have an impromptu weekend barbecue.

But the shop specializes in more than meat. Cheeses, fresh produce, gift baskets, and other locally made items line the walls, while glass-bottle sodas, classic candy, and an old-fashioned peanut grinder give a nod to yesteryear.

“The idea to start the shop really came from the community,” says owner Teresa Neal. Neal’s a lifer when it comes to the meat industry. In the early 1970s, her father opened Midway Meats in Davidson County as a wholesale business. While the shop, still open today, deals primarily with restaurants, it also developed a large base of walk-in retail customers. To satisfy this rising faction, Olde World was born.

So what sets the meats here apart? “The freshness,” Neal says. “Unlike grocery stores, we do all our processing in-house, so the meats are guaranteed fresh.”

With the shop growing steadily in popularity, it’s clear this olde place is making a lot of new fans.

Olde World Meat Market is at 166 Millers Creek Dr. For more information, call 336-602-2021 or go to http://www.oldeworldmeat market.com.
