The Way We Were

November, 2008

Dedicated on November 4, 1925, Calvin H. Wiley School is on Northwest Boulevard at Hawthorne Road. Named for the chairman of Winston-Salem’s first school board and North Carolina’s first superintendent of schools, Wiley has hosted elementary, junior-high, and middle-school students throughout its long history. The Calvin H. Wiley monument that stands on the current school grounds originally graced the school on West Fourth Street that Wiley helped found in 1884, the West End School.
