The Way We Were

By Molly Grogan Rawls

In 1909, automobiles of any kind were a novelty on the streets of Winston-Salem. So residents had a special treat in October 1909 when Winston-Salem was one of the stops on the Good Roads Tour, which began in New York City and ended in Atlanta. The tour was organized to promote a national highway between the two cities. This photo shows a heavy crowd assembled on Main Street. The Zinzendorf Hotel sits on the left, while a line of 40 automobiles is on the right. The city welcomed and entertained the nearly 250 motorists and guests during their overnight stay. Ty Cobb, the American League baseball player, drove one of the cars and spoke to residents at the Elks’ Auditorium during his visit to the city.
