The Way We Were

Molly Rawls

The O’Hanlon Building has been a fixture on the northwest corner of Fourth and Liberty streets through several generations of Winston-Salem residents. Ed O’Hanlon first occupied a three-story building at that location in 1896 and operated his drugstore there until a fire in 1914 demolished the building. O’Hanlon relocated his business across the street and began work on an eight-story brick building that opened in November 1915 at the original location. Many residents recall visiting the soda fountain at the drugstore, which also served as a social hub for people of all ages. The drugstore portion of the building closed in 1961. The lower floor today has retail and office space, while the upper floors continue to house offices for a variety of businesses.
